Collection of interviews of the ÚSTR

The Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes

Between 2008 and 2019, the staff and collaborators of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes systematically traced memorials of totalitarian regimes in Czechoslovakia according to pre-defined research projects and recorded their memories. In many cases, the recording took place in cooperation with partner institutions, in particular Post Bellum and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. These included participants in the resistance and resistance against communism, Czechoslovak citizens imprisoned in Soviet Gulag labour camps, participants in foreign protests against the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968, emigrants fleeing Nazism and communism, and members of minority churches persecuted between 1948 and 1989. The recorded testimonies of the witnesses serve as a source of historical research, for publications, exhibitions and educational activities of the Institute and the general public. In most cases, video recordings were made of the interviews. The recordings are preserved in full quality in a digital repository, which was created within the NAKI project in cooperation with the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen.
