  • "In Neveklov there is a castle and in front of the castle there is a big pond. And the commander could only let a few boys to leave for Easter, but wives, girls and parents came and stood by the pond, and we who couldn't go because of the service were there. The Hradecky trumpeter got leave and Vasek Jíchů and I didn't, because we were on the wound. When he left, we played 'Love, God Love'. He turned around and joined in and we finished it. Then we had another one, and because the girls started crying, the commander got angry, whistled the alarm, all the roll call in the yard. We went to the pond, put personal things away, put the two smallest boys on the sides, including the officers who were already ready to go. He took off his pistol, hung it around his neck, stepped into the pond and said, 'March in!' So we walked across the pond, we walked through the town, you know how those girls cried and cursed! We got past Neveklov, there's a little meadow on the left, we went down there three times, came back muddy, got to the barracks, and he said, 'Whoever's dressed in twenty minutes can go.' You cannot imagine the mess. Everybody, including the officers, under the showers washed off the mud and left. We stayed with Vasek because we didn't have anyone."

  • "You could say that we have built an apprenticeship here that has won logging competitions. It was an apprenticeship when the Nordic method of logging came in, and we trained the whole North Bohemian region in batches of workers to become more skilled in this activity. And my wife can tell you that when we are at hunting events, how many of my apprentices report [to me]. They're white bearded old men nowadays, you'll see that in the photo, and they'll all thank you for the way we've brought them up. They said, 'Mr. Mrňák didn't coddle us. When I did something, he asked if I wanted a note or a few slaps. So I said a couple of slaps and Mr. Mrňák offered to let me defend myself,' because I was teaching them self-defense at the same time. One even came in, I was in the workshop, my wife called me, he brought bananas and oranges and said, 'I have to thank you again for how you prepared me for the forest. And since you never drank or smoked, I brought you some fruit.' I've smoked one cigarette in my life and I've never been seen to drink more than is healthy."

Josef Mrňák was born on 4 May 1934 in Hatě in the Kolín district, where he lived with his parents and older brother until he was 15. After finishing elementary school in Uhlířské Janovice, he started working as an assistant forester and in the autumn of 1949 he joined the newly founded forestry apprenticeship in Jizerka in the Jizera Mountains. After his apprenticeship, he continued his studies at the secondary forestry school in Bělá pod Bezdězem and in Písek, where he graduated in 1954. After graduation, he joined the military forests for a short time, but soon the war awaited him. He served in air defence as a radio operator and played the trumpet with his colleagues in an army music ensemble. At the end of 1956 he returned to the military forests in the Mariánské Lázně region. In 1958 he visited Hejnice during his leave and was offered by the director of the forestry school to become his deputy and master of training. After accepting the job offer, he settled in Hejnice with his first wife Eva. He completed his pedagogical education and worked at the apprenticeship until his retirement. From his youth he collected pieces of wood from trees and bushes and devoted himself to painting and drawing. Since the early 1980s he has been making original wooden jewellery. A decade later he began selling them at craft markets across the country. In 2010, his jewellery was awarded the Regional Product of the Jizera Mountains certificate. In 2014, he received the Master of Traditional Handicraft Production of the Liberec Region award. At the time of filming, his collection consisted of 460 species of wood from all over the world. In September 2024 he lived with his second wife Jana in Hejnice.
